Comment: I hope to see lots of classmates at the reunion.

Life has been interesting for a Latin major who just wanted to be a housewife and mother.  In 1978 I became a placement consultant for a full-service personnel placement company in Houston, TX; next I was a secretary for Tenneco Oil Co., but all those education classes tempted me into teaching.  For 9 years I taught Latin, American and World History, and even English in The Woodlands, TX, and, after I returned to MD to help my parents, Friendly High and Lord Baltimore Middle School in P.G. County.  After marriage (to Bob), a summer job led to my becoming a Technical Writer for Computer Sciences Corp. and then the Publications Department Manager for an environmental consulting firm. The next major change was as the creator of an online help system for a small-business accounting application. Next came a few years with Cisco Systems, starting in the publications group but moving up to the program management group as a Quality Systems Engineer. It was fun teaching the programmers and testers how to write their bug reports to fit into Cisco's proprietary tracking system, plus I got to travel to the home offices in CA. After Cisco's big layoff, I became the Configuration Manager for a DoD Program Management Office that was developing a travel management software program for use across the DoD.

At 55 I "retired" and became a professional genealogist.  Now that Bob and I are both retired, I'm concentrating on being a grandmother to Syliva Nash (son David's little girl; Mark is still single) and traveling. We have met distant relatives in France, Finland, and Italy (Bob) as well as Sweden and Germany (me). I also discovered "lost" cousins in the US and reunited them with my first cousins. In 2009 we visited Greece with with classmates from '65 and '67.  Dean and Mary Katherine Earp Groseclose organized a wonderful tour for our small group (Sandy Kendrick Burton & Bucky, George and Janet Taube, Pam Sabatino Passerini, David and Kathleen, a 70s DuValian,  Cowley).  We've been to 2 weddings in France, near Paris; visited a farmhouse in Germany that dates to the early 1700s, and done research in the original parish books in a tiny town in Italy in the unheated, very old parish house.  My son David insists I don't know how to retire.

Carolyn Bowen (Schlauch)

Marital status: Married
Children: 2
Occupation: Retired - Public Library
Comment: I'm retired from working in the children's department of the public library which was a job I thoroughly enjoyed.  Now I am thoroughly enjoying being retired and hanging out with my husband and best friend...practicing yoga, traveling  as opportunities arise, playing with our grandchildren, soaking up everything Virginia has to offer.  We had a great experience at DuVal...good teachers and congenial classmates.  Much appreciation to all who have worked on the website and reunion activities.
